# Customer Settings: Customer Types

Create customer types to group customer records, require a company name for selected types and optionally apply a default discount.

## Before you start

- Decide which customer categories your team needs, such as retail and trade.
- Create any customer discounts first if you want to set a default discount on a type.

1

### Open Customer Types

Go to **Settings → Customer Types** under Customers.

2

### Add a type

Choose **Add Customer Type**.

3

### Set the type details

Enter the required **Customer Type Name**. Optionally select a **Default Discount** and turn on **Company Name Required** if customers in this category must provide a company name.

4

### Save the type

Choose **Save Customer Type**.

## What happens next

The customer type becomes available for customer records and appears in the Customer Types settings list.

## Common questions

**Can I set a different default discount for a type?**
Yes. Choose a default discount when you create or edit the customer type.

**Can I require a company name for every customer?**
Set Company Name Required on the customer type where that requirement applies.
